Carnoustie preparing for it’s eighth British Open
The Open Championship returns to the links course of Carnoustie in Scotland in July.
Carnoustie last hosted The Open in 2007 when Padraig Harrington was the winner. Harrington went on to win again the following year at Royal Birkdale.
It will be the eighth occasion that Carnoustie has hosted The Open with the likes of Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Tom Watson and Paul Lawrie among those to have gone on to win at what is widely regarded as one of the most challenging courses in major championship golf.
Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, executive director – championships at The R&A, said: “The Open is only a matter of weeks away and there is a great deal of anticipation for when the global sporting spotlight once again falls upon Carnoustie for what will be a world class festival of golf.
“It is always exciting to see the venue for the championship begin to take shape with the installation of the grandstands, spectator facilities and iconic scoreboards and we look forward to the arrival of many thousands of fans from all around the world in July.”
A £5 million ($NZ9.6 million) extension to Carnoustie Golf Links Clubhouse opened last month. The community facility includes a bar and restaurant, locker rooms and caddie facilities, as well as a new pro shop.
Seven golf simulator bays, featuring some of the world’s most famous courses, will also be installed in the building.
