Kobori and May win South Island Stroke play

A pair of Cantabrians have both stolen the show at the South Island Strokeplay Championships held at St Clair Golf Club over the weekend.

Kazuma Kobori lapped the field winning by a whopping 16-shots following rounds of 64, 66, 65, and 65 to finish at 24-under par. Maddie May also put on a dominant performance to win by 11-shots after firing rounds of 69, 67, 71, and 73 to capture the women’s title.

Kobori took control of the men’s event right from the opening day and never looked back. He made 26 birdies and an eagle on his way to capturing yet another trophy to his growing cabinet, with only three bogeys.

All Kobori needed to do in the final round was avoid disaster and the tournament was his, and he did just that and firing a flawless round of six-under and card the lowest round of the day for the fourth day in a row.

One of the pre-tournament favourites Jaeseung Na took second place at eight-under, with Stephen Liu and Zach May wrapping up the bronze medal at six-under par.

Meanwhile May proved to be just as dominant in her victory in the women’s event, also carding the lowest round of the day on the opening three of the four rounds.

Only Rianne Li carded a better round than May throughout the entire tournament, which came in the final round with a two-under par 72 which saw her take out second place.

Local hope Sumin Kang clinched second place at five-under.
