Auckland’s dominance continues at Interprovincials

Caryn Khoo was named player of the tournament at the Interprovincial Championship. She turns professional this year

Seven wins in the last nine years — that’s the outstanding record of Auckland in the women’s division of the Interprovincial Championship.
The latest win came at Sherwood Park Golf Club in North Auckland last month when Auckland cruised to a 4-1 win over Canterbury in the final.
Auckland was simply unstoppable throughout the week of the Toro-sponsored championship, dropping a mere 2.5 points in the pool play section of the tournament.
Auckland was anchored by player of the tournament Caryn Khoo, who went undefeated at No 2 in her final appearance at the event. Carmen Lim and Siyi Keh were also unbeaten, at No 4 and 5 respectively.
Khoo had been playing college golf in the United States for some time and this was his first Interprovincial for six years. She was delighted to be part of the winning side before she takes the leap to becoming a professional this year.
“It feels awesome, it’s been a very long time since I was here and it’s nice to do it in my last appearance,” Khoo said.
One of the Auckland side’s most successful players is Brittney Dryland. She finished things in style in the final with a 20-foot putt from the fringe of the green and the ball rocketing into the back of the cup to notch up an amazing fifth Interprovincial title.
“Every year we have a great team that gets along, both on and off the course, so I’m just really happy for all of them,” Dryland said after the win.
“This is my fifth win and it feels as good as the first. It’s been an awesome journey with all the Auckland girls and I love this event.”
While Auckland had a stress free final day, it was a different story in the second semi-final earlier in the day between Canterbury and North Harbour with all hopes falling on the shoulders of No 3s Catherine Bell (Canterbury) and Vaha Fapiano (North Harbour).
Fapiano sent the crowd into rousing applause after a rallying comeback which was completed on the 18th hole to extend the match. However, from there Bell was able to compose herself and made a clinical up and down on the first extra hole to secure Canterbury it’s second final in three years.
This meant that Bay of Plenty took home the bronze medal after a very impressive week in the far north with their most impressive 4-1 win being against Canterbury in the final round of pool play.
This year’s Interprovincials will be held at the Christchurch Golf Club.
