Golf the most boring sport to watch, says survey
Golf has topped a poll in Britain.
But it was a poll the game would have preferred to finish last in.
The poll was conducted by YouGov, an international internet-based market researcher based in London.
YouGov asked more than 1600 British adults what was the most boring sport to watch. Golf was the winner, so to speak.
Those surveyed were given 17 sports to choose from and golf couldn’t even beat American football, despite that game being foreign to most Britons.
The result was also surprising in that golf in Britain is boasted as having two million regular players.
What’s more golf was a clear-cut winner. Seventy percent of the respondents said golf was boring to watch and there was a gap of 11 percentage points to American football at 59 percent.
Following closely behind were cricket and darts at 58 percent each while fifth was snooker at 57 percent.
If some of those figures surprise you then the real winner will probably surprise too. Of the 17 sports offered, the one with the least amount of votes considered as boring was athletics. Just 28 percent of respondents said athletics was boring to watch.
The results of the survey did not concern Keith Pelley, the chief executive of the European Tour.
Pelley told The Telegraph newspaper: “Totally disagree and our fan engagement in 2017 would also suggest otherwise.
“Last year, the European Tour saw large TV ratings increases, while our social engagement increased by 35 percent.
“All sports need to modernise, and we are leading the transformation of global golf with our players being some of the world’s largest sports personalities. If the poll was accurate, we would not be as successful and able to grow our business as we are doing today.”
