ROXBURGH GOLF CLUB Annual event 99 years

Just a short drive from Queenstown and Dunedin lies one of New Zealand’s ‘hidden gems’, Roxburgh Golf Club.

The club are celebrating a milestone achievement in 2020 with their 99th annual golf tournament on the 14th and 15th of August, which has traditionally been a popular event for the golf club. They attract around 100 golfers every year to partake in the event which wouldn’t be possible without the volunteer support of all the members.

Club President Nigel Arnesen says the club can’t wait to get the event underway.

“The golf club is about 130 years old and this year is our 99th annual tournament which the club is very excited for.”

“Roxburgh Golf Club is a short course. You don’t need a driver to play well around here. We are a par 68 and the course record is 58 which was shot at our annual tournament.

“We play a four-ball nett competition on the Friday where we normally get 80 to 100 golfers entered. There is an on-course BBQ going all day free of charge.

“On Saturday we have a 36-hole championship for both men and women, and for people that don’t want to play 36-holes in a day we run an afternoon fourball for them as well,” Arnesen says.

There are only 40 male members of Roxburgh Golf Club along with 20 women. The club relies on a lot of volunteer support.

Roxburgh Golf Club member John Stephens volunteered his help to assist the club with a new website full of imagery; an example of how the members give back to the golf course.

“We have a new website full of awesome imagery of Roxburgh Golf Club which was led by one of our members John Stephens.

“The club environment is great. We only have a small member base for our 18-hole golf course, and we’ve employed a greenkeeper that does 20 hours a week and everything else is done by the volunteers. The members all support the golf club really well.”
