He had a 10-stroke lead over speedgolf rookie Brad Shilton after day one and just needed to avoid disaster to win his third title in the last four years. A 74 in the final round was the second-best gross score of the day and was good enough to get over the line in the gold medal position.

Bernie Smith took out the silver medal with a total of 249.19, while Shilton took bronze with 256.57.

Meanwhile Liz Mckinnon managed to keep her perfect record at the New Zealand Speedgolf Open, winning the women’s event for a sixth time.

Mckinnon has carded a two-round total of 283.15 following rounds of 87 in 57 minutes and 35 seconds on the first day, and 79 in 59 minutes and 40 seconds on the second day.

She had a battle on her hands on the final day with Renee Fowler nipping at her heels after day one just three shots back.

Mckinnon took her time over her shots on the final day, shooting the best gross score by seven to get her name on the trophy and keep her perfect record intact.

Fowler claimed the silver medal with a two-round total of 301.26, two shots clear of overseas participant Colette Blacklock who travelled from Australia to play when the Australian bubble was announced.

Other winners of their divisions include Troy Harold who took out the 50+ division, and Braydon Hills who won the u20s.
