The Inaugural 2015 Seeka Kiwifruit Whangamata Women’s Masters Golf tournament was held recently at the Whangamata Golf Club. 124 contestants from 29 clubs including one from Australia participated in the three day event over 54 holes. The weather gods behaved and turned on a warm and cloudless final day.

Restricted to women golfers over the age of 40 and modelled on the hugely popular Seeka Kiwifruit Mens Masters also run by Whangamata, the tournament had a full field only one day after the opening day for entries. Entertainment provided during the tournament included a fashion parade and wine tasting session on the Friday evening, and a buffet dinner and a 1960’s “Beside the Seaside” music hall cabaret topped off a very entertaining Saturday evening.

Susan Hancock of Matamata held her nerve and sank the putts that mattered to win the Open Gross with a 3 round gross score of 235, followed by Akarana’s Raewyn Riggir on 237. Third place went to Te Aroha golfer Trish McBride on 244.

The Open Nett winner was Whangamata’s Jeanne Wilson on 193, from Debbie Carney of Tahuna on 201, and Dianne Sweeney of Walton on 205.

The Open Stableford competition was won by Jan Morgan of Walton with 122 points, from Lynda Stratton of Pukekohe with 121, and Robin Groombridge of Warkworth and Betty Gee of Matarua third equal with 115.

The Whangamata Golf Club wants to thank all participants for contributing to a memorable weekend of golf and entertainment, and help make this inaugural tournament such a success.
