A BUSIER HUNTLY GOLF CLUB

It has been a really busy past month at the Huntly Golf Club! A return to pennants play in the

WGA Prebble Cup and Tolich Shield has seen our team successfully make the semi finals. It

would be great to have a win, but regardless it has been good to see the enthusiasm for competition

being demonstrated by our team managers and playing members: Michael Garrick, Bruce

Cobb, Wayne McMillan, Ofa Vakameilalo Jnr; Rangi Morgan; Te Iwingaro Morgan; Michael Anderson;

Russ Ford; Ray Foran; Stephen Jessup and Myles Ormsby.

It has also been many years since our course has been played by over 600 players in one month

and this achievement evidences that after two years of recovery and revitalisation, we are gradually

returning to normality and the good old days. Hosting big group events have helped the numbers,

with COVIC (Finals 1 Round), WDVGA (2020 Finals) and NZVGA (3 day event), however, it is

the many rounds being played every morning, noon and late afternoon, by our now 200+ members,

that is so good to see. Regular club day scrambles continue to be well supported on Saturdays

(9-10am), Sundays (8.30am 9-hole Hackers) and Wednesday (10am Vets and Guests) mornings,

while our once month midweek open is becoming increasingly supported by locals, Aucklanders,

Hamiltonians and Mooloos from affiliated clubs across the region.

The NZ Veterans Golf Association event saw 22 campervans parked up and over 40 players (22

Men and 18 Women) representing clubs all over the North Island enjoy three different playing format

events in three days.

The leading event players were: 1st Mark Benjamin (Day 1: 1st, Day 2 2nd, Day 3 5th); 2nd Jerry

Kuggeleijn (4th; 4th; 1st); 3rd Anne Braithwaite (7th, 3rd, 9th); 4th Aaron Chen (3rd, 6th, 11th); 5th

Cherie Bezer (14th, 4th, 5th).

Tuesday night saw a successful social evening and a yummy $10 meal (thanks to the efforts of

Keri, Tracey and Rangi Morgan) before the final day saw twenty of our own Huntly club members

merge with the visitors for a special meat pack day. The event’s success will see it held once

again in 2021 (on September 27, 28, 29) and we expect in the years beyond.
